In this season of reflection, we are looking back this month at 40 years of neighbors helping neighbors through the community hub of Queen Anne Helpline.
We incorporated as a 501(c)3 in December 1982, a date which brought to fruition a conversation between neighbors. Local leaders of both faith-based organizations and businesses were concerned about the intense new economic realities their congregants and customers were facing. These neighbors knew that the issues were too large to meaningfully address singlehandedly. They also knew that the issues demanded a meaningful response, so they decided to join forces and create Queen Anne Helpline.
In the ensuing years, we’ve helped thousands of people maintain housing and food security, stock closets with good quality clothing and linens, and access resources to bring their goals within reach. As you know, we haven’t solved homelessness; in fact, the issue continues to grow and intensify. But instead of finding ourselves in despair, we are heartened by what’s possible when we work together to strengthen community at the local level.
Queen Anne Helpline envisions engaged communities that honor human dignity, value belonging, and embrace interdependence. We know that building a strong community requires all of us to have the tools we need to reach our full potential. By providing financial assistance, healthy meals, dignified clothing, and other resources, we fortify our community’s collective well-being.
Today, we offer a welcoming environment for our clients, donors, volunteers, and staff. As we emerge from the darkest days of the COVID pandemic, we are stronger than ever. As we begin the next 40 years, we will continue our mission-driven work: preventing homelessness and bolstering access to the foundational resources we all need to thrive. We know that unforeseen challenges lie ahead, and we will face them squarely with the strong support of our community, adapting our work to the demands of the world around us.
40 years ago, a group of concerned neighbors gathered to build stronger community. Today, we have more support from the community than anyone could have imagined. Our work would not be possible without you. With your support, all of our neighbors will have the necessary tools to both persevere and thrive.
